What are the types of headaches?
There are two types of headaches -
1. primary headaches – accounts for 90% of all headaches. This is not related to any other disease. There are three types of primary headache –
a. tension headaches – associates with stress, anxiety and depression.
b. cluster headaches – occur daily, over a long period.
c. migraine.
2. secondary headache – associated with an underlying condition such as cerebro-vascular disease, head trauma, infection, tumour or some metabolic disorder (such as diabetes, thyroid problem). In these cases, the underlying condition must be diagnosed and treated.
3. One may also suffer from something called “mixed” headache in which tension headache or secondary headache triggers migraine headaches.
What causes headaches?
Almost everybody must have had an experience of a headache sometime or the other. Headaches are more common in women and in people with a genetic history of headaches.
Tension headaches are caused by stress, muscular tension, vascular dilation, postural changes, prolonged coughing/sneezing, and fever.
Physical conditions that can lead to chronic muscular tension and thereby, headache include:
* Anxiety
* Arthritis in neck or spinal cord
* Degenerative bone disease in the neck or spine
* Depression
Cluster headaches may be due to alcohol abuse or the side effects of certain medications, including drugs that dilate or constrict blood vessels. A low level of endorphins (natural painkilling compounds found in the brain) may cause frequent, severe, or chronic headache pain.
Other common factors that make people more prone to headache are -
* constipation

Diagnosis of a headache?
In most cases of headache, there is no need to visit the doctor. A very severe headache that appears suddenly, or one that deteriorates instead of getting better with time requires medical investigation.
One can even identify the type of headache, by being a bit alert. Each time you have a headache, make a note of how bad it is, where the pain is, any other symptoms, and if any type of pattern emerges.
This can help find out triggers, which can thus be avoided.
If a headache is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, or disturbed vision/speech, or loss of memory, one must immediately consult a doctor.

The only caveat to be aware of is that Butterbur naturally contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA’s) which are toxic to the liver so it is important to find a butterbur extract that is free of these chemicals.
5) Co-Enzyme Q10 The Mitochondria in our cells work to produce energy for the body through a process known as oxidative phosphorylation. It has been found that at least a subset of migraineurs have a dysfunction in their ability to perform this process. In studies, Co Q10 has been shown to help improve energy production in the mitochondria of human cells. Co-enzyme Q10 is very safe even in large doses and has a host of other health benefits protecting the heart, providing more energy and being a powerful anti-oxidant and more.
6) Essential Fatty Acids It is believed that neurogenic-inflammation (inflammation in the brain) is involved in the causation of migraines. Our cells contain an enzyme that causes inflammation. It is normally used to protect us when when we’re injured, dealing with allergies, or when in diseased states. The body also has an enzyme that naturally decreases inflammation. However, when the ratio of inflammatory to anti-inflammatory enzymes becomes unbalanced (they easily can due to pollution, stress, and toxins) the result is damage and the deterioration of your body similar to a car overheating after being run too hard and too long. The result can range from arthritis in your joints, damage to the brain causing Alzheimer’s disease, damage to your arteries causing hearth attacks and stroke or in this case contributing to your migraine attacks.
Essential fatty acids have the nutrients that your body needs to bring these enzymes back into balance cooling the inflammation of your body and brain.
This list may seem like a lot to take but it results in a migraine cure that really works. Now to avoid having to take handfuls of pills (I try to keep my pill popping to an absolute minimum when ever possible) you should look for a product that contains a combination of ingredients in one. That way you get the benefit of fortifying yourself in multiple ways at once while lowering the number of pills you have to take daily.
